Sindh asked to share projects for federal flood protection plan.

KARACHI -- Federal Minister for Water Resources Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah on Wednesday said that the federal government was formulating a flood protection plan and asked the provincial government to send its projects to the Centre for approval.

Presiding over a meeting to review the flood relief activities in the province at the Sindh Secretariat, he said that whatever contingency plan the provincial government made for upcoming monsoon rains should be shared with the federal government.

Chief Secretary Dr Muhammad Sohail Rajput, MPA Nawab Sardar Khan Chandio, provincial secretaries, officials of NHA, NDMA and PDMA among others participated in the meeting.

The federal minister said that the unprecedented monsoon rains had caused a lot of damage to the country's economy, especially agriculture. 'To avoid this situation in the future, the federal and provincial governments have to work together,' he added.

The chief secretary informed the meeting about the rehabilitation of the flood victims.

He said over 2.1 million houses were affected in the floods and added that the provincial government had decided to rebuild these houses with the support of the World Bank which was providing $500 million, while the provincial government was contributing $250m.
