Walls of Hazro school's classrooms crumbling.

TAXILA -- The walls in four classrooms at Govt Boys' High School in Hazro have started crumbling only three years after their construction, which was funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Besides major cracks in walls, roofs of these rooms have also been leaking. The school's management has also closed down the school's two dining halls.

Millions of rupees were spent on the construction of the four classrooms under UNHCR's refugee affected and hosting areas programme (Raha). The project was executed by Participatory Rural Development Society (PRDS) in 2017. Headmaster of the school Mohammad Iltaf said soon after their construction cracks began appearing on the roof along with leakage.

'The matter was taken up with PRDS, which laid a fourth layer on the roof to stop the leakage, but this has not technically addressed the flaws in initial construction. Now, within three years of its completion, the walls and roof of these classrooms have started crumbling which the staff of the school attributes to alleged use of substandard material,' he added.

A teacher employed at the school said: 'As many as 900 students are enrolled in this school.

It is astonishing that other classrooms, constructed decades ago by the Punjab building department under the supervision of the education department, are in good condition.' When contacted, PRDS Project Director Salman Khan...
