Chaos, bad governance and mismanagement witnessed in the megacity during recent two days of rains has made it clear that Karachi needs the special status of 'charter city', as the present setups at city, provincial and federal levels have failed to cater the megacity, said Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor here Wednesday. He said the step-motherly treatment of the provincial and federal governments to the megacity has compelled the Karachiites to think to demand for a charter city status for their megacity.

He said under the charter city status the megacity could frame its own rules and laws tailored as per its peculiar needs, instead of blindly following the general laws in all respects. He said the models of governance in Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Shenzhen should be studied seriously and adopted where necessary to give Karachi much needed independence in governance and administrative methods and free it from pathetic dependence on the provincial or federal governments.

Altaf Shakoor said we should study the charter city model as given by renowned growth economist Paul Romer and take practical steps to give administrative independence to the megacity Karachi as a charter city.
