Institute of Gender studies, University of Sindh, Jamshoro organized a seminar on 'The Role of National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) towards Betterment of Women in Pakistan'. Khawar Mumtaz, Chairperson NCSW was the chief guest and keynote speakers at this eve, whereas; SU vice chancellor Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat presided over this significant event.

Dr. Burfat in his presidential observations remarked that despite these being modern times, women in Pakistan were still generally discriminated against, marginalized, victimized, mistreated and denied their rightful space in almost all spheres of life.

Paying rich tribute to NCSW initiatives, the vice chancellor said that the commission has, by and large, been able to effect visible and tangible positive change in the lot of women in the country; adding that its contribution was immensely palpable towards abolishing the heinous custom of premature marriages, abrogation of women barter as penalty in tribal feuds, advocacy for the cause of enhanced women quota in parliament, provision of legal aide to women subject to various forms of violence and pursuance of proposal to the varsities to formulate gender policies.

Quoting father of the nation Quid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Dr. Burfat observed that it would be a crime against humanity if women were confined merely within the four walls of their homes like prisoners; stressing that they (women) should stand side by side with men as their companions in all walks of life.

"No society will ever prosper; lest it ensured full participation of one equal half of its population and visibly recognized its crucial role towards nation building", the VC said. Dr. Burfat eulogized the efforts of SU Institute of Gender Studies towards spearheading research in the context of issues facing women in Pakistan; congratulating Dr. Misbah Qureshi and her team upon organizing seminar on the given important theme.

Event chief guest and keynote speaker of the day Chairperson National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), Ministry of Human Rights, Government of Pakistan Khawar Mumtaz shed light on the rationale behind constitution of the commission, its purpose, objectives, achievements and relief initiatives, monitoring mechanism and research engagement.
