'Slum dwellers to be rid of hazardous sewage disposal tanks'.

BAHAWALPUR -- The two sewage disposal tanks at the biggest katchi colony Tibba Badar Shair will be closed down to pave the way for the construction of parks and playgrounds at a cost of Rs4 million.

The assurance was held out to a group of colony residents at an open court held by Divisional Commissioner Asif Iqbal Chaudhry on Friday.

The delegation told the commissioner that the overflowing disposal system had submerged their streets and houses with sewage. The commissioner informed them that he had already sanctioned Rs4 million for the purpose when he was told about the issue being faced by the slum dwellers. Now, he added, an uplift scheme was in the offing to construct a covered drain to divert the sewage towards the dried-up bed of the Sutlej.

He said the two open sewage tanks would be closed and the land utilised for their conversion into parks and playgrounds for children. He also assured the visitors that he would ensure scheme's implementation in the shortest possible time.
