Shangla admin gives life jackets to boat operators.

SHANGLA -- The district administration, Shangla, has distributed life jackets among boat operators here in Martung tehsil which would be used by passengers while travelling in boats in the Indus River.

The ceremony was held at Hashamkhel village of Nusratkhel union council the other day where deputy commissioner Imran Hussain Ranjha, officials of Pakistan Red Crescent Society and a number of local people and boat operators were present.

Earlier, the boat operators were given a demonstration of right use of life jackets besides sensitising them to the importance of adopting safety measures.

On this occasion, Mr Ranjha said that boats were used as primary mode of transportation for movement of passengers and goods in a number of remote villages of Shangla.

On July 3this year, a boat that started its journey from Kamach, Shangla, had capsized in Tarbela Lake near Haripur. As a result, 10 people from Shangla had drowned in the incident.

In order to prevent any loss of life in such incidents in future, the administration made efforts to promote use of life vests.

However, local boat operators are too poor to buy life jackets in bulk for the use of passengers and they had requested the district administration to provide the same.
