Proposed amendment to local govt law rejected.

HARIPUR: The district council here on Thursday unanimously rejected the proposed amendment to the Local Government Act, 2013, and asked the government to strengthen district tier of the local body system instead of abolishing it.

The council met with acting convener Asif Ali Jah in the chair for the first time after district nazim Adil Islam was removed through the passage of a no confidence motion last month.

After the start of the proceedings, a resolution of acting convener Asif Ali Jah, which was seconded by Ghalib Khan, was tabled in the house for discussion.

The resolution claimed that the provincial government was planning to abolish district councils by reducing the local government system to tehsil councils, and village and neighborhood councils through an amendment to the Local Government Act.

The members discussed the proposed amendment and said the prime minister had repeatedly lauded the performance of the existing three tiers of the LG system in the province and even asked Punjab and other provinces to follow that model but the proposed amendment to the LG law went against all appreciation.
