THERE is a long way to go before peace finally prevails in Afghanistan. It is the Afghan people who have to put their house in order. For this to happen all parties to the conflict have to sit down and talk.

The country's history shows that foreign invaders have come and left Afghanistan while internal conflicts have persisted. The Taliban are a force to reckon with and the other parties in Afghanistan have to accept this fact and come to terms with this reality if there is to be a lasting peace in the country and the region.
