The EU firmly believes in multilateral governance systems based on values, working with others to respond to global crises, threats and challenges that require cooperation and coordination. The EU believes that multilateral cooperation is key to sustainable peace, respect for human rights and development. The United Nations is a vital part of a multilateral system and it has produced tremendous work of the over the past 75 years in a number of areas A including humanitarian assistance, delivering food assistance and conflict prevention and resolution. It is for this reason that the EU and its Member States are the largest financial donors to the UN system, providing almost a quarter of all financial contributions to the UN's funds and programmes - for humanitarian support, fighting climate change, upholding human rights and conflict prevention and resolution. The biggest global health crisis of our generation A the covid pandemic - is a reminder that the world is closely connected A and that multilateral cooperation is critical to addressing both current and emerging global challenges. In this case as well, no country is safe until all countries are safe.
