MC Taxila chairman to be sworn in on Feb 6.

TAXILA -- The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified the election of the chairman and vice chairman of the municipal committee (MC) Taxila on Wednesday.

Their oath taking ceremony is scheduled to be held on Feb 6.

The ECP notified the election of PML-N's Sheikh Waheedud Din as chairman and Raja Kamran as vice chairman under section 227 of the Election Act and section 37 of the Punjab Local Government Act.

The polls were held on Jan 7 but the official notification was delayed by the Punjab Local Government and Community Development Department.

Barrister Aqeel Ahmed had lodged a complaint to the secretary Punjab Local Government and Community Development Department on behalf of the winning candidates.

The election commission was subsequently directed to issue an official notification so that the oath taking ceremony may be carried out and the winning candidates be allowed to utilise their public office.

According to the official result announced by the election commission, PML-N candidate Sheikh Waheedud Din secured 16 votes and PTI's Malik Mohammad Pervaiz secured 13 votes in the 30-member house.

One minority member belonging to PML-N distanced himself from voting.

MC Taxila has 30 members of which 12 belong to PTI and 18 to PML-N.

Nine members of PML-N formed their own group after developing differences with the chairman and vice chairman, who were also from their party, over the award of development schemes.
