Man jailed for five years in Rs2m extortion case.

KARACHI -- An antiterrorism court has awarded five-year imprisonment to a man in an extortion collection case.

Arif Khan alias Khanzada was found guilty of collecting Rs2 million protection money from a businessman in November 2018 within the remit of the New Town police station.

On Thursday, the ATC-XX judge, who conducted the trial in the judicial complex inside the central prison, pronounced his verdict reserved after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

The judge noted that the prosecution successfully proved the charges against the accused beyond a shadow of a doubt.

The judge handed down five-year imprisonment to the accused and also ordered him to pay Rs20,000 as fine.

On default, he would undergo an additional six months in prison.

According to the prosecution, accused Arif Khan threatened and demanded Rs2m extortion from the complainant, Hajirah, whose husband was in the petrol pump business.

The complainant paid him Rs1.5m extortion, the prosecution said, adding that sometime later the accused again received Rs500,000 from her.

However, the police arrested the accused red-handed while he was receiving Rs5,000 from the complainant on Sept 21, 2019.
