THIS refers to the news item (June 29) about former French prime minister Francois Fillon being given a five-year jail term, with a three-year suspended sentence, for financial irregularities and orchestrating a fake job for his wife, Penelope.

The 'Penelopegate' scandal has dashed his hopes of seeking another term, although he had an excellent career as he was the youngest member of parliament when first elected at just 27 years.
