Haemophilia treatment at govt hospitals sought.

KARACHI -- A facility to provide free of cost treatment to haemophilia patients opened in the city on Friday.

It's the first comprehensive facility dedicated to patients suffering from haemophilia, usually an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood doesn't clot properly. This can lead to spontaneous bleeding as well as bleeding for a longer time after injuries or surgery.

'The centre has already registered 735 patients from Sindh for treatment, which involves infusing commercially prepared factor concentrates. They are not manufactured in Pakistan,' said Raheel Ahmed, the president of Haemophilia Welfare Society, which has taken the initiative.

The treatment cost of a patient, he pointed out, was more than Rs200,000 a month.

According to him, there are 6,000 haemophilia patients in Sindh alone whereas the number of registered patients in Pakistan is about 22,000.
