Experts call for creating awareness of blood pressure.

PESHAWAR -- Health experts have stressed the need for creating awareness among people about high blood pressure, terming the disease a silent killer.

They said that around 7.1 million people were suffering from high blood pressure throughout the world. They said that high blood pressure also affected many people in Pakistan.

Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, Dr Amir Ashraf and Mohammad Hafeez of the cardiology department of Khyber Teaching Hospital said that blood pressure was a silent killer. They said that people were unaware of its negative impacts. They said that every fifth person was affected by the disease.

They said that the cardiology department of KTH would organise the 23rd Pakistan Hypertension League Annual Congress in Peshawar to create awareness among people. The conference will continue from March 6 to March 8. The theme of the conference is 'Hypertension beyond numbers'.

The health experts said that elderly people had a higher rate of being affected by blood pressure. They said that there were many causes of the disease including excessive use of salt, smoking, various types of addictive substances, depression, tension and non-serious use of blood pressure medications.
