SHANGLA -- A wooden suspension bridge on the Indus River connecting Maira area of Bisham tehsil with Jambera area of Battagram district is on the verge of collapse as most of its planks are damaged.

The local people have demanded of the government to rebuild the bridge to avoid any untoward incident.

The bridge was first built in 1982 by the Kohistan Development Project as most of the people of Maira and Jambera areas have family relations and frequently cross the river.

The 350 feet long bridge was damaged in 2010 flash floods. Later, it was repaired by then MPA Shah Hussain, but soon its planks, ropes and pillars started breaking down and the bridge was rendered unfit to use.

Khurshid Khan, a local notable, said that his cousin repaired the bridge several times as many students used the bridge to reach their schools daily.

'Over 350 students, including girls, cross the bridge regularly for attending their schools in Maira or Jambera. We are concerned because the ramshackle bridge is very dangerous,' he said.
