Diabetes! A Lingering Threat For Pakistanis.

According to the IDF (International Diabetes Federation), 33 million people are diabetic in our country thus making it rank 3rd largest in the world, while China is first on the list and India on second. I was forced to think that there is a dire need for the government quarters to look into this alarming issue and recalled one of my visits to a GP while I was in London.

Surprisingly, I came to know that heart disease and diabetes are linked with ethnic origin. It is found more often in Africa and the Indian Subcontinent.

In the West and Europe, people are obese but less diabetic. Diabetes is almost non-existent in regions where Mediterranean diets prevail. Being an old-time resident of twin cities, I heard the names of Dr Asjad Hameed, a British Pakistani and Mr Tahir M. Abbasi, a renowned philanthropist battling diabetes...
