Commission decides to ask govt to suspend Mayor.

ISLAMABAD -- The Islamabad Local Government Commission has decided to request federal government to suspend Mayor of Islamabad Shaikh Anser Aziz, so an inquiry related to an alleged corruption reference could be initiated against him.

A meeting of the commission was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister's Special Assistant on CDA affairs Ali Nawaz Awan. During the meeting, chief officer of the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) moved a reference against the mayor, in connection with the intercity bus terminal contract, pointing out that it was malafide, as post-bid changes were made in the contract.

The matter was deliberated in detail by the commission and it was decided that the federal government should be advised to suspend the mayor. Two members of the commission, from opposition parties Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed and Raja Pervez Ashraf were not present in the meeting.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Awan who is also the commission's head confirmed that it had decided in favour of advising the federal government to remove the mayor, so an inquiry could be initiated against him. He...
