China calls for seeking 'package solution'A for participation of new members in UNSC.

BEIJING -- China Thursday said that as core of the international collective security mechanism, the UN Security Council needed to better fulfill its responsibilities under the UN Charter through reforms and called for seeking a 'package solution'A that should increase representation and voice of developing countries, and allow more small and medium-sized countries in decision-making in the Security Council.

"As the core of the international collective security mechanism, the UN Security Council needs to better fulfill its responsibilities under the UN Charter through reform," Chinese Foreign Ministry's Spokesperson Geng Shuang said while responding to a question regarding the participation of Brazil and India as permanent members of the UN Security Council during his regular briefing held here.

He remarked that the reform should increase the representation and voice of developing countries, and allow more small and medium-sized countries to have the opportunity in the Security Council to participate in decision-making.

The reform of the Security Council was of great importance, involving the long-term development of the United Nations and the vital interests of all member states.

"At present, there are still huge differences between the parties and a lack of broad consensus on the reform plan," he added.

China, he said was willing to continue working with the United Nations Member States to seek a "package solution" that took into account the interests and concerns of all parties through dialogue and consultation.

While commenting on the Russian President's annual State of the Union Address that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council should strengthen cooperation to eliminate international conflicts, he said that the Chinese side agreed with President Putin.

Geng Shuang said that the five permanent members of the Security Council shouldered special responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

"The current international situation has witnessed a marked increase in instability and uncertainty and regional hotspot issues have risen one after another," he added.

He said that the international community had generally called for upholding multilateralism and strengthening the role of the United Nations.

"This year is the 75th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. Both peace and stability are of great significance," he added.
