'An act of sadism'.

APROPOS the editorial 'An act of sadism' (Feb 28). While endorsing fully your views concerning the ever-growing menace of sadism in our society, I disagree with the editorial when it says that 'compassion does not seem to be part of our national character.' I see it as an overstatement.

An act of a few individuals must not be construed as national characteristics. True, the cases of gross intolerance, savagery, sadism and inhumanity are sadly witnessed to our great dismay and horror in our society. Such unpleasant incidents are demoralising and shameful for all sane elements of our society.

The unscrupulous people involved in such heart-wrenching episodes must be brought to book and accorded exemplary punishments...
