14 patients of Covid-19 died overnight: Murad.

KARACHI -- As many as 14 patients of coronavirus died overnight taking the death toll to 171 in the province.

This was stated by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday.

'Although the deaths in terms of total patients [are] 1.9 per cent yet we are losing our precious lives and we can control it if we all observe SOPs and guidelines of experts in true letter and spirit,' he added.

In a statement issued from Chief Minister House, Mr Shah said that the first case of coronavirus was reported on February 26 and the first death occurred on March 19, 2020.

'Today on the 72nd day of pandemic we have 9,093 cases and from March 19 to May 7 means within 49 days coronavirus has claimed 171 lives,' he said.

More random tests at grocery and vegetable shops to be held

The chief minister said: 'This is the situation I want to share with each and every individual living in the province so that they can assess where we are heading and how we have to reshape our lives during the ongoing [pandemic].'

He said 3,534 tests were conducted over the past 24 hours and 453 new cases were diagnosed. 'The tests conducted so far come to 76,078 against which 9,093 cases have been detected,' he said.

335 cases belong to Karachi

The chief minister said that out of 453 cases, 335 belonged to Karachi.

He added that 91 cases belonged to district Central, 81 to South, 69 to East, 33 to Korangi, 33 to Malir and 28 cases belonged to West.

'We are increasing the intensity of the random tests at grocery and vegetable shops and this will help detect more cases of local spread,' he said.
