Woman 'tricked into' suicide bid by man she had eloped with.

OKARA -- A woman retrieved from the Lower Bari Doaab Canal (LBDC) near Renal Khurd two days back has told police that the youth she had eloped with tricked her into jumping into the canal to 'jointly commit suicide' but ditched her at the eleventh hour.

Locals had informed the Renala Khurd city police and Rescue 1122 service on spotting a woman who was about to drown in the canal water. Acting timely, the rescuers retrieved the woman who had fallen unconscious by the time.

She was hospitalised and on regaining her senses on Tuesday night, the woman, identified as Ghulam Mazharan, a resident of Thekriwala, Faisalabad, told police she had a love affair with Muhammad Ali, of Faisalabad.

She said as their families opposed their plan to marry each other, they eloped and started living at Renala Khurd.

She said they had been receiving life threats from their families and fearing they would be caught, they decided to commit suicide by jumping into the LBDC.

She said as per their plan, they jumped into the canal, but Ali swam back to the bank leaving her in the water and fled away.
