ON Nov 28, 1997, the Supreme Court of Pakistan was stormed while the court was in session with the chief justice and other judges hearing a case against the sitting prime minister of the time. It was not too different from the scenes that marked the attack on the Capitol Hill as the lawmakers were meeting to formally endorse the president-elect's electoral victory.

There are terrible and unbelievable similarities between these two unfortunate incidents. As happened in 1997 in Islamabad, when the mob was vandalising, damaging and occupying some parts of the building, police and the law enforcement personnel simply stood by as silent spectators. Similarly, when the Capitol was attacked, the US police did not resist the assailants.

The US president failed to condemn the attack just like the prime minister in Pakistan had never said a single word to denounce the attack. In Pakistan...
