Unpaid power project workers block road.

MANSEHRA -- Hundreds of labourers, who were laid off by a company executing the Suki Kanari hydropower project, on Wednesday blocked the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road for the payment of the two months withheld salary.

'The company didn't clear our dues despite our ultimatum, we're left with no option but to block this main artery to traffic to lodge our protest,' labour union president Tahir Hussain Shah told protesters.

The protesters, who had staged a sit-in in Paras area earlier in the day, blocked the MNJ Road to traffic inconveniencing commuters stranded in their vehicles in long queues on both sides of the road.

The protesters shouted slogans against the company for violating the government's order by first laying over 1,600 workers in the garb of Covid-19 emergency and then withholding their salary.

'Eidul Fitr is around the corner but we are struggling to feed families. If salary is not paid to us, we'll die on the road,' he said.

Another labour leader, Jalauddin, demanded the immediate restoration of all workers and the payment of salary to them before Eidul Fitr.
