Ts.dagiimaa: My Father is Famous Not Only in Mongolia But Throughout the World

By B.NARANTUYA

The following is an interview with Ts.Dagiimaa, daughter of Top Artist of the 20th Century of Mongolia, State Honored Artist O.Tsevegjav.

Ts.Dagiimaa is the fifth child of seven children. She works at the International University of Ulaanbaatar, as the Dean of the Humanitarian Department and as the Chairwoman at the Department of English Language. She has been working in the education sector for 34 years.g

Could you please tell us about your father?

My father, O.Tsevegjav, was born in 1915 in Agiin Province, at a place called Shaazgait. When my father was a year old, his family moved to Bayandun Soum of Dornod Province. He entered school in 1926 and obtained only four years of formal education. He was naturally talented in painting. He didn't complete any higher education. However, by developing his talent, he created many famous paintings and played an important role in the Mongolian fine art sector.

My father was one of the seven people who established the first fine art establishment in Mongolia in 1942. Today, the fine art sector of Mongolia is developed well and has many skillful artists.

My father is the person who first introduced the movements of cattle to the fine art sector. He used to paint and describe the movements of cattle.

In 1960, when new art trends were becoming popular in Mongolia, such as abstract art, modernism, and expressionism, my father created an abstract painting called "Mother's White Soul". Because of his abstract piece, he was punished as during the socialist period. However, this painting introduced a new level to the Mongolian art sector.

My father passed away when he was 60 years old and now it has been 40 years since that time. The 100th anniversary of his birth will take place this year.g

What kind of activities have been planned for the 100th anniversary of O.Tsevegjav's birthday?

We are planning many things. In Bayandun Soum of Dornod Province, we organize a painting contest named "Ochir Tsevegjav" among high school students every year. The contest took place this year and the results will be announced very soon. Also, the Stallion Fight contest was organized among students of the Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture (MSUAC). We are opening an art studio named after my father at the MSUAC on May 15, and the contest results will be announced during the opening ceremony.

We are preparing to publish an album of the paintings of my father with the help of Munkhiin Useg Company.
