Three warders punished for beating condemned prisoner.

SAHIWAL -- Three warders were suspended from service while a deputy superintendent was issued a notice for beating a condemned prisoner in the Sahiwal Central Prison on Wednesday.

Prison DIG Kamran Anjum told Dawn he had formed an inquiry committee to look into the matter.

Prisoner Asif was tortured by warders Nazair, Asif Raza and Murtaza. Asif's father Ashraf alleged the warders were demanding money and other favours from his son. Though Asif was shifted to jail hospital but his father approached Magistrate Ijaz Ahmed for his medical examination. Asif will be shifted to the Sahiwal District Headquarters Hospital for medical examination.

PARKS: Up to Rs170 million will be spent to upgrade and beautify three city public parks under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded Punjab Intermediate Cities Improvement Investment Programme (PICIIP).

Under the six-year programme, urban facilities in Sialkot and Sahiwal will be upgraded. Chaman Zar Park, Fateh Sher Park and Farid Town Park will get facilities like playgrounds, jogging tracks and children areas in one year, PICIIP in charge Umair Ali said.
