Sachal Sarmast urs observed online.

KARACHI -- The 199th urs of great Sufi poet Hazrat Sachal Sarmast, whose tomb stands in Daraza Sharif, Khairpur, was observed in cyberspace allowing his disciples and followers in Pakistan, England, Hungary, Canada, Bahrain, Oman, Sweden, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Finland and other countries to participate in it online.

On Friday evening, an online lecture was simultaneously organised on Zoom as well as Facebook in which noted scholar and writer Jami Chandio delivered his talk on the life and poetic works of Sachal, who is not just a great Sufi of the subcontinent but also a resistance poet of the Sindhi and Seraiki languages.

Chandio said that Sachal also recited poetry in Persian and Urdu languages. 'It is incorrect to say that Sachal recited his poetry in seven languages,' Chandio revealed.

'It is said that Sachal himself destroyed all his poetry during his lifetime and whatever poetry is available to us, in fact, is [what is] remembered by his followers,' said Chandio.

Two collections of Sachal's Sindhi and Seraiki poetry have been printed in book form by the Sindhi Adabi Board. But a lot of his poetry in Persian and Urdu languages still remains unpublished though it is available with his followers.

To a question, Chandio said that the translation of Sachal's Persian poetry was also available.
