RIU should be functional by Feb end: commissioner.

RAWALPINDI -- Commissioner retired Capt Mohammad Mehmood on Friday directed departments concerned to make Rawalpindi Institute of Urology (RIU) functional by the end of February.

Making the deadline of two months for the health and building departments, the commissioner said recruitment of doctors and paramedical staff would be completed so the hospital would be made functional.

He gave the instructions during a meeting held in his office to review work on development projects in the city. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the district administration and Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA).

The construction of the 400-bed RIU, spreading over 96 kanals, started at an estimated cost of Rs2.19 billion in 2012. The project was to be completed by 2014 but due to slow funding it is still incomplete. However, the PTI-led government has released funds to complete the project.

The commissioner directed to complete the first three floors of the hospital within two months and install the equipment. He said water supply and sewerage system should also be completed as soon as possible.

He informed the officials that the government had allocated Rs200 million extra for the project which would be released next week.

He said the building department should speed up the work.

He asked the building department to install fire safety equipment near electric panels.
