Rights-based approach must for GBV survivors.

LAHORE -- The Dastak Charitable Trust held a consultation on Monday regarding gender-based violence (GBV) and a rights based approach towards it.

The meeting was headed by Saba Sheikh from Dastak.

'While civil society has succeeded in its advocacy for legislative reform to address GBV, there is still a gap between legislation and implementation,' she said.

'Even though the Punjab Protection of Violence against Women Act of 2016 has been introduced, the reporting of such cases still remains low, and victims continue to fall through the cracks of the system.'

The meeting which included representatives from various governmental departments including the Chief Minister's Strategic Monitoring Unit, and the Social Welfare Department discussed how the victim response services could be improved. They agreed that the response services currently available failed to address the concerns and issues faced by survivors of violence.

They also discussed how there was no regulatory framework that holds service providers accountable, allowing them to adopt adhoc system, and procedures when dealing with GBV survivors. Those who do follow the proper benchmarks, are only a handful and are mostly...
