Recent rains to benefit cotton crop.

MUZAFFARGARH -- Recent rains will have a positive effect on the cotton crop and if no major pest attack occurs, the region will produce a bumper cotton crop this time.

Dr Zahid Mahmood, director of the Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan, said this in his message to the cotton growers on Sunday. He said that due to rains, the blackness of the crop will be removed and the process of photosynthesis in the plants will be improved which will increase the growth of cotton plants.

Dr Mahmood said the recent rains would reduce the infestation of juice-sucking cotton insects. Due to the rains, the plants get natural nitrogen from the atmosphere, which provides the crop with an immediate need for nitrogen fertilizer.

He added that up to 15mm of rainfall does not have any adverse effect on the crop, but in the current situation if the rainfall is more than 15 mm and continues for three consecutive days, the cotton crop can be severely damaged.
