PTU demands cancellation of women teachers' census duties.

LAHORE -- The Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) on Friday demanded the government cancel the women teachers' duties for conducting the census starting from Feb 1.

The PTU office-bearers held a meeting on the issue of census duties of the women teachers.

The meeting was chaired by PTU central president Chaudhry Sarfraz. The participants said the census was being started from Feb 1 in the country and female teachers were assigned duties to conduct the census. They said it was unfair for the women teachers to conduct the census as they would have to visit every house to register the people. They said it was not a good decision and it would be humiliating for their female colleagues because they would have to knock on the doors of every house.

The PTU office-bearers said there were extreme winter weather conditions and it would be difficult for female teachers to work in the field in these extreme weather conditions. They demanded the government, the minister for school education, the chief secretary and the school education department secretary to cancel the census duties of women teachers.

They said the government should cancel the duties otherwise they would have to announce a strategy to deal with the situation. They added that the teachers could not be forced to do census duties and the census work would also leave a negative impact on educational activities.
