Protesting councillors demand funds, powers.

BAJAUR -- The members of local councils held protest demonstrations in different districts on Tuesday against the provincial government for not providing funds to them.

In Bajaur, scores of members of local government including chairmen and members of union and neighbourhood councils attended the demonstration held outside Civil Colony, Khar. The protesters, holding banners and placards, were led by Khar tehsil council chairman Haji Said Badshah.

They chanted slogans against the provincial government for not giving funds and powers to them. They said that they were elected in December last year but provincial government was giving funds and powers to them.

Haji Said Badshah, Khar union council chairman Anwar Hussain, Malik Shah Wali Khan, Farman Khan and others addressed the rally. They also complained about what they called the insulting behaviour of officials with them.

The protesters dispersed when a team of district administration officials assured their leaders to convey their concerns to provincial government.

In Kohat, the chairmen of the neighbourhood and village councils held a protest against the amendments made to the Local Government Act.

They announced to challenge the changes in court. The protesters, led by Kohat city mayor Qari Sher Zaman, said that if the amendments were necessary, those should have been made before the local bodies' elections.
