PPP suffers setback as key senator from KP resigns.

ISLAMABAD -- The opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has lost its strength in the Senate as its leading senator from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, KhanAzada Khan, has resigned from his membership.

After the veteran parliamentarian tendered his resignation a few days ago, the Senate Secretariat issued a notification on Wednesday, stating that Senate ChairAman Sadiq Sanjrani has accepAted Mr Khan's resignation.

The PPP, the second largest party in the 104-member House after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, has now been left with 19 senators. Since Mr Khan belongs to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it is highly unlikely that the party would win back the seat.

'Mr Khanzada Khan, a member of the Senate of Pakistan, has resigned his seat by writing under his hand addressed to the Senate chairman... ConseAquently, his seat has become vacant in terms of Clause (1) of Article 64 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan with effect from 30th October 2019,' says the notification issued by the secretariat of the upper house of parliament .

Sources said Mr Khanzada was unhappy with the PPP leadership for suspecting him of foul play during the recent crucial vote on no-confidence motion against the Senate chairman during which the opposition faced embarrassment when a number of its senators ditched their parties and despite having clear majority in the Senate, the opposition failed in its efforts to remove Mr Sanjrani.
