BEING loyal to one's department and obey one's seniors can sometimes cost one's life. This is what happened with Constable Kamal Ahmad who was part of a team of Punjab Police that raided a house before a long march that was called by the main opposition party recently.

Whenever any sit-in or march is announced, law-enforcement agencies are used for political benefits and power show by the governments. Likewise, those in the opposition at any given point in time use all their resources to target the law-enforcement personnel even though they know fully well that the individuals are simply carrying out orders.

In all this political game, the victims are policemen who bear all the losses. Last year, when supporters of a party were on the roads protesting and asking the government to expel the French ambassador, four policemen had been martyred and more than 250 were injured.

Those responsible for the death of these policemen have never been held...
