Police volunteers (mis)using uniform for criminal activities.

SARGODHA -- Police volunteers have been found involved in criminal activities after a video went viral on social media of a woman in police uniform receiving bribe from people in front of the Saddar police station.

District Police Officer Ammara Athar took notice of the video and directed for registration of a case against the suspect, Rabia Basri of Lakseen village. During the initial probe, over 16 volunteers of the district were found involved in criminal activities while wearing the uniform.

The volunteers were suspended, their uniforms seized and a thorough probe initiated against them.

Currently, there were over 400 police volunteers who were also receiving a considerable monthly remuneration from the department. An insider disclosed that the volunteer force acted as middlemen between complainants, suspects and police.

He further said the volunteers were allegedly involved in drug trafficking with the connivance of police, as a couple of days ago the driver of Sub-Inspector Mazhar Gondal was arrested by Bhagtanwala police and he confessed to selling narcotics on behalf of Gondal.

He was arrested with over one kilogramme of hashish. Gondal was suspended and an impartial inquiry ordered against him.

A police officer posted in the DPO office said that over 200 volunteers were recruited upon recommendations of political elites, adding that half of them were performing duties with parliamentarians, carrying illicit arms for them and being used against political opponents.
