People block roads to protest power outages.

LAKKI MARWAT -- People held protest demonstrations against prolonged power outages in Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and Swabi on Friday.

In Lakki Marwat, the residents of Kurrum Par area reached Landiwah Chowk on the Indus Highway and closed it to traffic. The area elders and local government representatives also participated in the agitation.

The speakers said on the occasion that the Pesco staffers had disconnected power supply to over 40 villages and hamlets on the pretext of power theft and low recoveries.

They said that the entire area was without electricity for the last one week, creating numerous problems for the residents.

They said that no one had stopped the officials of the power company to take action against electricity stealers and defaulters.

They added that it was unjust to deprive consumers of the facility who had been paying their bills regularly.

They made it clear that the busy highway connecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with rest of the country would remain closed until the power supply was restored to Kurrum Par area.

In Bannu, people took out a procession from Hafizjee Mosque and gathered in front of the Pesco offices after passing through different bazaars.

A JUI-F leader Malik Rahat Ali led the procession. The protesters burnt tyres and closed Bannu-DI Khan road to traffic.

They also pelted stones at the Pesco offices.

The speakers on the occasion criticised the federal government and Wapda authorities for unscheduled power outages. They said that the urban and rural localities were hit hard by excessive outages, which had added to the troubles of area people.

Later, the people opened the road when Pesco officials assured them that the loadshedding duration would be reduced.
