PDM parties to contest Senate elections.

ISLAMABAD -- Departing from its earlier stance, the parties in Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) are going to contest the upcoming Senate elections and will field a joint candidate for the seat of Chairman Senate.

The sources privy to the development told The Nation that the opposition parties through a proper consensus have decided to postpone the en-mass resignations and will take part in the Senate Elections.

The sources on the condition of anonymity claimed that the opposition parties have decided to use the option of en-mass resignations after losing all the options. The sources further said that the alliance was considering many options and one of them was to field joint candidates for the Senate elections. The sources revealed that the leadership of PDM will also create contacts with the Imran Khan's government allies before the Senate elections in order to give tough time to the government.

While talking to The Nation on the matter, Awami National Party's (ANP) senior leader Zahid Khan said that this option was in consideration but many party had some reservations over it. He stated that the final decision whether or not to take part in the Senate elections will formally be announced in Monday's meeting.

Jamiat Ulema e Islam (JUI) senior leader and provincial media coordinator of PDM, Abdul Jaleel Jan told The Nation that the opposition parties had no other option but to go for the Senate elections and the option of resignations to be considered after the Senate elections.

He stated that the decision regarding taking part in the senate elections will formally be announced soon by the PDM leadership. It must be noted that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has already announced to take part in the Senate elections. While addressing a media talk in Lahore PML-N's senior leader Khurram Dastagir had said that they will fully participate in the Senate polls and PDM will jointly contest the Senate election.
