PCB committee holds second meeting on resumption of departmental cricket.

LAHORE -- A second meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) cricket committee was held on video-link here on Wednesday to discuss the resumption of the departmental cricket, although no definite progress was made on the issue.

According to the PCB press release issued on Thursday: 'The committee also had a discussion on the participation of departments in the 2020-21 season. It was agreed that the committee will provide its suggestions, which will be forwarded onto the PCB management for consideration.'

Since Iqbal Qasim, a former Test left-arm spinner, is heading the cricket committee and he is a vocal supporter of the departmental cricket, the issue is being thoroughly debated in the committee.

The suspension of departmental cricket has deprived thousands of cricketers from their jobs with different departments as they are compelled to search for other jobs to earn money for survival. Early this year, the PCB, following an advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan for holding quality cricket with the introduction of six-team formula at the first-class level, abruptly disaffiliated a good number of departments.

But the fact remains that the PCB was much better off going along with the departmental cricket since it did not need to make any heavy investment for holding departmental cricket as every department was responsible about getting its own grounds on rent, to provide accommodation to their teams besides their travelling expenses and to pay the cricketers and coaching staff their monthly salaries.
