Parks to have libraries for women and children.

RAWALPINDI -- The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will establish libraries in major parks of Rawalpindi district to promote book reading culture among women and children.

Chief Minister's Adviser on Horticulture and Tourism Asif Mehmood told Dawn that the government had decided to establish libraries-cum-cafe in parks where there was enough space.

'The PHA in Rawalpindi will be a model in this regard and has conducted a survey and finalised 10 parks. There are over 53 parks but 10 have enough space to establish libraries,' he said.

These parks are: Dhoke Munshi, Rawal Park, Potohar Park, Allama Iqbal Park, PIA Park, Bagh-i-Shaheedan, Murree Park, Khyaban-i-Sir Syed Park, Morah Sharif Park and Gulzar-i-Quaid Park.

He said a private company would establish the libraries and the contract would be awarded as per rules, adding tenders had been called.

The concept of libraries was borrowed from the civil society that had worked for promotion of reading culture in society.

He said women and children would go to the parks in the evening for walk and get books there.

He said it would be their choice whether they would sit there and read or borrow a book.

He said the libraries would be manned by women librarian which would also generate employment for them.
