Over 2,000 fee-related complaints received against private schools, NA body told.

ISLAMABAD -- The Private Educational Institute Regulatory Authority (Peira) has received over 2,000 fee-related complaints against the private schools so far during the current year.

Besides, the regulator received 1,114 general complaints against the private schools.

Peira said a majority of the fee-related complaints was registered against upscale schools.

The revelation was made by Peira officials during a meeting of the subcommittee of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Education on Monday which was chaired by convener Ali Nawaz Awan.

The officials presented a working paper in the meeting, saying that the authority had received 2,080 complaints (1,588 on the citizen portal and 492 walk-in complaints) against 148 schools relating to [alleged] illegal/unauthorised charging of fees from students by the private schools.

The officials told the subcommittee that the regulator's rules with regard to regulating private schools, particularly determining the fee, had been suspended by the Islamabad High Court.

Syed Umair Javed, joint secretary ministry of education, who is also Peira's acting chairman, told the NA body that following the Supreme Court's orders and subsequent recommendations of the subcommittee, the regulator had on Sept 23 written to the private schools that the current fees being charged by them stood frozen at the rate prevailing in January 2017.
