Organ transplant institute to be set up in Islamabad.

ISLAMABAD -- With the support of philanthropists, state of the art organ transplant institute and medical city would be established in the federal capital to provide a number of health facilities including liver transplant, kidney transplant, cure for different types of cancers and other complicated diseases.

Eminent transplant surgeon and former chief executive officer (CEO) of the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) Prof Dr Saeed Akhter said that while talking to Dawn.

'I have recently visited the US and have convinced philanthropists to come to Pakistan and play their role in building the transplant centre. Some of the philanthropists, even in the country, have shown interest in establishing a state of the art transplant institute and medical city,' he said.

Replying to a question, Dr Akhtar said the purpose of acquiring land in the outskirts of Islamabad for establishing the medical city was to provide a serene environment to patients coming from Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and northern areas.

Besides, land in urban areas is very expensive as compared to rural areas, he added.

Dr Akhtar has served as Urology Department Chairman, at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas, US and a number of others areas. Recently, he returned to Pakistan and started working for a private hospital.

Earlier in 2014, he had a meeting with former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif during which it was decided to establish PKLI. A number of doctors from abroad joined the PKLI.

However, later the board of governors (BoG) of PKLI was dissolved and Dr Saeed was sacked on the directions of the former Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar in September 2018. The CJP was of the view that the project was delayed and the salaries of Dr Akhtar and other staff were too high.
