LAHORE -- Under the Prime Minister's Agricultural Emergency Programme, a national plan for improvement of irrigation canals with more than Rs46 billion is being launched to save 0.4 million acre feet water per year, says Punjab Agriculture Minister Malik Nauman Langrial.

The country is among the seven water-stressed states. Around 93 per cent of the available water is used for agricultural purposes.

For improving the status of available water, a Rs46 billion National Programme for Rehabilitation and Sustainability Outlets is being initiated in which Punjab will contribute 60pc and the federal government the remaining 40pc, the minister said while reviewing irrigation improvement projects here on Thursday.
