Mushroom dealers suffer losses over shrinking demand.

UPPER DIR -- The people associated with the mushroom trade are suffering losses over shrinking demand due to the lockdown enforced to contain spread of Covid-19.

Talking to Dawn here on Monday, they said due to suspension of international flights the orders for the product had stopped coming.

It is to be mentioned here that mushrooms grow abundantly in the mountainous areas of Upper Dir and a lot of people are connected with the business for decades.

The locals earn a living by selling the mushrooms to small businessmen, who then sell the product to big dealers from Swat, Rawalpindi, and other cities.

They said that the lockdown had badly affected their business because dealers from cities weren't sending them any orders for the product.

Karim Bakhsh, a mushroom dealer, said he had been running the business for almost three decades. ''But since the lockdown was enforced their business has dried up, depriving them of handsome earning.''

Mr Bakhsh said mushrooms were supplied to Spain, Germany, Italy, China, Saudi Arabia and other countries. ''But due to suspension of flights to these countries the demand of mushroom has drastically decreased.''
