Mongolian Artists to Exhibit in Forbidden City

Within the frames of cooperation between China and Mongolia, Mongolian artists will launch an exhibition at the Imperial Ancestral Temple (Taimiao) in the Forbidden City of China on October 20.

A total of 20 Mongolian artists and 20 Chinese artists will display over 160 artworks at the exhibition.

Below is an interview with director of the Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery (MNMAG) N.Batbaatar about the exhibition.

How is the MNMAG expanding its foreign relations?

On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and China, an exhibition titled "Collecting Pearl of Dunhuang" was held at the MNMAG last year.

During that exhibition, the MNMAG agreed with administrators of China Academy of Art and Governor of Hohhot on exchanging experiences of Chinese and Mongolian artists, and visiting China once every two years to launch an exhibition. According to the agreement, Mongolian and Chinese artists are about to unveil an exhibition titled "Melody of Steppe" in the Forbidden City.

A lot of tourists visit China every year, and they usually go to the Forbidden City. It's a big opportunity for Mongolia.

What's special about "Melody of Steppe" exhibition?

The Forbidden City is located behind the Tiananmen Square. Tiananmen Square is the heart of China. Many tourists go to see Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City every year. Tourists will see "Melody of Steppe" while they tour around the Forbidden City. Mongolian traditional arts such as khuumii (throat singing), long singing, and dance will be performed at the opening ceremony of the exhibition. It will attract tourists for sure.

How many artists will participate in the "Melody of Steppe"?

A total of 40 artists from Mongolia and China will attend the exhibition. They will display over 160 artworks illustrating traditional lifestyle, customs, culture and development of their country. "Melody of Steppe" exhibition will be unveiled at the Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery on December 1.
