Lockdown extended in G-9.

ISLAMABAD -- The capital administration has extended the lockdown in two G-9 sub-sectors for another three days.

G-9/2 and G-9/3 were locked down on June 13 after a surge in reported Covid-19 cases in the area.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Hamza Shafgaat told Dawn that the lockdown has been extended for another three days on the advice of health departments, as the coronavirus is continuing to spread among residents.

He said the situation will be evaluated again on Tuesday afternoon, when it will be decided whether to continue the lockdown or lift it.

Mr Shafgaat said that the District Health Office`s rapid response team has collected 600 samples from both localities so f ar. The team is approaching suspected patients and people who have been in contact with confirmed patients to test them.

The results of these 600 tests are awaited, and ground surveillance is ongoing as well, he said. The decision on whether to lif t or extend the lockdown will be made on the basis of these results.

He added that two sub-sectors in I-8 and I-10 have been sealed for the last two days, and proper surveillance in these areas will begin in two days,as symptoms of Covid-19 will begin to appear among those who have contracted the disease.

Mr Shafgaat said that teams of the administration, police and Rangers began visiting I-8 on Saturdayafterlearning that residents were leaving the sealed area.

`We received information that some people left I-8 secretly and violated the lockdown,` he said, adding that the matter was taken seriously and the possible escape route was also closed off.

Protective kits and edibles were also distributed among officials deployed at pickets tointercept movement, and the pickets themselves were inspected along with water, power and sanitation systems.
