Livestock sector always neglected, says minister.

HYDERABAD -- Sindh Livestock and Fisheries Minister Abdul Bari Pitafi has said that the livestock sector in the country contributes 21 to 23 per cent to the GDP.

He was speaking at a ceremony held to distribute insemination kits and nitrogen cylinders among students of Sindh Agriculture University, TandoAjam, at the artificial insemination centre on Monday.

Total 662 students completed their training for artificial insemination at the centre.

He said the livestock sector was never given preference in the country unfortunately.

He said that a memorandum of understanding had been signed by the livestock department, breeder association and other stakeholders to preserve and raise rare species of cattle through artificial insemination. Those breeds would also be registered, he said.

He told students to share benefits of artificial insemination among cattle owners during their field visits to help them take good care of their animals with the new knowledge and advice.

He said that since different breeds were mixed and the department could not distinguish among them, therefore it was trying to preserve them through artificial insemination process.

The minister told the trained students that if farmers were happy and prosperous, Sindh and Pakistan would progress ultimately. He emphasized the need for hard work by inseminators in their field work. He said that two breeds had been popular in the country which included indicus and taurus.
