LipuLekh issue; Kathmandu warns New Delhi over any activity 'inside its territory'.

ISLAMABAD -- Tensions over territorial claims ran high after Nepal asked India to refrain from carrying out any activity inside its territory after New Delhi opened a new road which ran through the disputed territory.

Yesterday, the link road was opened by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, which linked Dharchula in the India state of Uttarakhand to the LipuLekh passing near India's border with China.

Nepal had expressed its strong regret over New Delhi's inauguration of the road in the disputed territory at a strategic three-way junction with Tibet, China.

In a statement, Nepal's ruling Nepal Communist Party termed this act of India as undermining Nepal's sovereignty.

Reacting to opening of road Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said, "This unilateral act runs against the understanding reached between the two countries including at the level of prime ministers that a solution to boundary issues would be sought through negotiation.'

Fresh wave of tensions surged between the two countries last year when a new Indian map showed Kalapani within state of Uttarakhand annoying Nepal.

Though India was quick to dispel Nepal's statement claiming that the new road was completely within its territory.

On Saturday, a large number of people gathered outside the Indian embassy in Kathmandu to protest against the road, despite a nationwide coronavirus lockdown.

Nepalese experts and politicians also raised their strong voices on social media and other platforms to condemn Indian move.
