Khyber tehsil chairmen to continue protest.

KHYBER -- The elected chairmen of three tehsils of Khyber have pledged to continue their protest against any move of the provincial government to curtail their powers besides moving court against the proposed changes to local government system.

Talking to Dawn, Landi Kotal tehsil chairman Shah Khalid Shinwari said that they had come to know that MPAs of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf wanted to divert funds from tehsil, village and neighbourhood councils, limit the role of tehsil chairman and councillors in the affairs of provincial government departments and curtail the administrative powers of the tehsil chairmen.

He said that provincial government wanted to amend Local Government Act, 2019 and consultations were afoot to muster the support of maximum number of MPAs to pass the said legislation from the provincial assembly.

'We are in touch with the local government associations at the provincial level while continuing with our peaceful protests against any such move and also weighing options to move Peshawar High Court and even Supreme Court of Pakistan for getting legal and constitutional relief,' said Mr Shinwari.
