Justice Gulzar Ahmed takes oath as 27th CJP.

ISLAMABAD -- Justice Gulzar Ahmed has sworn in as 27th Chief Justice of Pakistan here on Saturday. President Dr. Arif Alvi administered the oath to him at a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Nadeem Raza, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, DG ISI Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Senate Chairman Mir Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Hussain Qureshi, Law Minister Barrister Dr. Farogh Naseem, Special Assistant to PM on Information and Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, Governor Sindh Imran Ismail, Governor Balochistan Amanullah Khan Yasinzai, Governor KP Shah Farman, other members of the federal cabinet, parliamentarians, serving and retired judges of the Supreme Court and lawyers. Former chief justices of Pakistan justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani also attended the ceremony.

Justice Gulzar Ahmed, who replaces Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa as the chief justice, will serve till February 21, 2022, as the 27th chief justice.

It is worth mentioning here that President Dr. Arif Alvi had appointed the senior most Judge of Supreme Court Justice Gulzar Ahmad as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from 21st December.

A notification to this effect had been issued by Ministry of Law and Justice 4th December. Justice Asif SaeedKhan Khosa retired on Friday as chief justice of Pakistan after reaching the age of 65 years.

'In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (3) of Article 175 A read with Article 177 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President is pleased to appoint Mr. Justice Gulzar Ahmed, the most Senior Judge of Supreme Court, as Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from 21.12.2019,' read a notification issued from the Ministry of Law and Justice.

Justice Gulzar Ahmed was born on February 2, 1957, in Karachi to the family of Noor Muhammad, a distinguished lawyer. His elementary schooling was from the city's Gulistan School, according to the Supreme Court website. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Government National College, Karachi after which he obtained his law degree from S.M. Law College, Karachi.
