Islamabad, Rawalpindi see surge in Covid-19 cases.

ISLAMABAD -- The twin cities saw a surge in Covid-19 cases on Thursday with Islamabad reporting 126 infections and the Rawalpindi district 47 cases and one death.

As many as 5,798 samples were collected in the federal capital on Wednesday of which 126 were found positive and the positivity rate was 2pc.

District Health Officer Islamabad Dr Zaeem Zia told Dawn that despite an increase in cases the situation in hospitals was quite satisfactory.

'There are a number of vacant beds in hospitals and any patient needing treatment is admitted,' he said.

He said the standard operating procedures (SOPs) regarding educational institutions were being enforced.

'We are vigilant and any school reporting two or more cases will be sealed to disinfect the building and break the chain of the virus,' he said.

Rawalpindi

One person died of Covid-19 on Thursday while 47 people tested positive in Rawalpindi district. Moreover, 11 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

Tawazir Bibi, 87, resident of Sadiqabad, was brought to Fauji Foundation Hospital on Jan 20 where she died on Thursday morning.

Rawalpindi hospitals received 12 patients from Cantonment areas, seven from Potohar Town and 11 from Rawal Town.

Besides, four cases were reported from Gujar Khan, one each from Kotli Sattian, Kalar Syedan and Kahuta. One patient was also brought to Holy Family Hospital from Islamabad. At present, 302 active patients are in the district.

Total 56 patients have been admitted to hospitals - eight in Benazir Bhutto Hospital, 10 in Fauji Foundation Hospital, nine in Holy Family Hospital, three in Red Crescent Hospital, three in Hearts International Hospital and 19 in Rawalpindi Institute of Urology (RIU).

Commissioner retired Capt Mohammad Mehmood said the number of cases had increased in Rawalpindi division compared to last three days as 47 patients were reported from Rawalpindi, 10 from Attock and seven from Jhelum.

He said the administrations of the four districts were working hard to create awareness about the safety measures.
