AFTER the 1975 clashes between Indian and Chinese forces over Ladakh, the border between the two Asian giants was never finalised owing to New Delhi's frequent backtracking and muddying of the issue.

The extremist BJP government sent its army to annex more Chinese territory in May and Beijing politely but firmly resisted. It seems the BJP has badly miscalculated and was misled by China's gentle response, and it resorted to more mischief.

This time the response was swift and stringent. In the latest clash, India initially officially confirmed the death of a colonel and two soldiers and later went on to accept that 20 Indian soldiers had perished in the fighting. The Chinese...
